Case Study of Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery
Madonna
Definition of cosmetic surgery: face lift: plastic surgery to remove wrinkles and other signs of aging from your face; an incision is made near the hair line and skin is pulled back and excess tissue is excised; "some actresses have more than one face lift"
Madonna is a world famous US singer-songwriter, businesswoman and actress. She has sold more than 300 million records worldwide and is recognized as the best-selling female recording artist of all time, recorded in the Guinness World Records.
Madonna undergone multiple facial cosmetic procedures, which is also known as ‘‘mini face-lifts’’ or laser resurfacing facial operations. There were suspicions of her undergoing Botox injections, as well as a facelift with volume restoration, possibly using a collagen replacer. She had several reports of undergoing cosmetic surgeries such as face lift, nose job, chin fix, jaw reduction, and filling injections. Madonna had temporary hyaluronic acid fillers to lift her cheeks, as well as blepharoplasty (surgery on the lower and upper eyelids), collagen injections in her lips, a neck lift, or a chin enhancement.

In many of the interviews, she has insisted that she never ever undergone any surgery at all. However, there are evidences that show that she has undergone cosmetic and plastic surgeries before.
There is no presence of wrinkles around her fore head and crow’s feet around her eyes' area, which indicates that Madonna had done Botox Injections & Restylane Injections. Looking at the picture of her before and after plastic surgeries, it can be observed that in 1998, her cheeks are very saggy and wrinkly even when she applied make-up. However, in 2008 (10 years later), she should be looking much older. However, in the picture above, which she had applied make up too, her cheeks made her look younger instead. This shows that she had possibly undergone cosmetic surgeries.
It was reported that Madonna had undergone sapphire and diamond treatment too. These are procedures in which the skin is exfoliated and a serum is applied. In sapphire and diamond treatment, a tool coated with sapphire crystals aggressively rubs the skin, removing the dead cells of the skin. This causes patients looking red & shiny because a layer of skin has been removed, giving them a youthful look.
Along with mini facelift, laser treatments, nose job, she has been suspected to have undergone breast surgery or implants. The rumours spread like wild fire when Madonna had seemingly grown by a cup size, when compared to her smaller chest in early 2006. However, it is quite possible that Madonna’s busty look of recent is because of Push Up Bras and Chicken Cutlets.

  1. Why did Madonna want to hide the fact that she had undergone surgery?

  2. Well, maybe because she was afraid of sparking criticism from the public and gaining unwanted media attention. However, the outcome of the surgeries are quite obvious, since it reduced a lot of her wrinkles. If she was afraid of getting criticised, why would she even bother to get plastic surgery in the first place?

  3. Although she fears to be criticized, the general public would not usually talk about her undergoing cosmetic surgery because they would rather talk about her successful career than her undergoing cosmetic surgery. Some people decide or consider to undergo alterations to their body because of Madonna, why?

  4. Well, as you can see, the cosmetic surgery she has done is successful. She looks more youthful and energetic after that. Hence, people takes beauty advices from her and would want to look as great as them. Currently, she is 54 years old. To me, she looks around 30 to 40 years old only. By undergoing cosmetic surgery, it caused her to conceal her real age, don't you think that this is an advantage to her?

  5. I don't see how this can be an advantage. Imagine if an old woman of age 65 udnergo cosmetic surgery and she ends up looking like she is 45-50 years old and others being appealed by her beauty decided to woo her. She would be concealing her own identity, in a way 'lying' to other people about her age if she looks so young due to such procedures. Although her outward appearance may look younger, hidden beneath is actually a wrinkly elderly woman. WHy does she want to conceal her identity then?

  6. I do not think she is trying to conceal her identity, but more of trying to cover up the symptoms of aging. Aging is probably one of the biggest fears for woman, and the biggest sign would be wrinkles. She probably went for botox injections to reduce wrinkles and look more youthful, it makes her feel more confident of herself, like a young energetic person instead of a fragile and weak old lady.

  7. I don't think that she wants the "conceal" her identity. She wants to give herself a new change so that she'll look prettier and better. In this realistic world, sometimes looks matter alot. People with looks can even earn more profit than people with talent. After doing many surgeries, do you think that she is contented with her looks?

  8. I beg to differ. Madonna herself said, ‘Sometimes, photographs that I see, I just think who that is? I don’t know that girl.’ Even she admits that her new self after the surgery is like an unknown stranger to her. She is trying to say that she looks like a different person, to the extent that she admits that the surgery has altered her whole face, and does not look like herself before. This shows that instead of boosting her confidence through her appearance, it destroyed her own identity. Since she feels that she looks really different, why does she continue doing many surgeries?

  9. For many people, they never feel contented. Even though she really looks prettier after cosmetic surgeries, she feels that she still looks ugly due to criticisms. Hence, she keeps on doing cosmetic surgery to make herself feel great temporarily and to gain confidence in herself. However, won't cosmetic surgeries cause harm to her health?

  10. It definitely does. It is a surgery that modifies or improves the appearance of a physical feature, irregularity, or defect. Since she has gone through many many cosmetic surgeries, it is highly possible thatIf massive alteration has been done and it might cause removal of significant amount of skin and tissues, possibly leading to substantial blood loss. Moreover, it might not be easy to encounter a new self, it takes time to finally accept your appearance.
